Home Insurance Extras
- earthquake damage
- flood damage
- damage due to acts of war, nuclear accidents or terrorism
You can often get coverage for these damage events through extra policies or endorsements to your standard policy, by paying an extra premium. Consider getting earthquake coverage if you live near a known fault zone or if there is a history of earthquakes in your area. If you live near a river, especially if your home is located on low, flat ground, or you live near a coastal area where hurricanes are a possibility, consider getting flood coverage. Do not count on your state of the federal government to cover you in the event of an earthquake or flood disaster. Even if you qualify for government disaster relief, it make take several months or even years before you get the money you need to start rebuilding your life.
If you have expensive jewelry or a home computer, consider getting extra coverage for these items. Most standard homeowner policies have limits on how much they will pay towards replacement of these items. Check with your insurance company about what limits are in place in your current policy.
