Auto Insurance Tips for New Drivers

While drivers with little or no driving experience will have higher premium payments than drivers that have been driving for several years, there are a few things you can do that that might decrease your new driver premiums. For example:
  • In addition to any required driving school, have your new driver attend a safety driving school. These types of driving schools give new drivers behind the wheel experience in dealing with potentially dangerous situations in the relative safety of a driving course with an experienced instructor. Typical situations covered at these driving schools include skid prevention and recovery, emergency stops, and high speed maneuverability exercises.
  • If your new driver is still in school, make sure they pay attention to their schoolwork since many insurance companies will offer good student discounts.
  • Don't forget to call your auto insurance agent to activate additional insurace coverage when your new driver gets their drivers license. Be sure to mention their good grades and any additional driving school experience they have. Also, ask about any other discounts your new driver might qualify for.
